Aspen resident marks five decades as volunteer librarian

20 April 2024

We’ve been celebrating our volunteers all week as part of National Volunteer Week. Volunteers help Silvera’s seniors live their best lives every day.

Some of Silvera’s residents are volunteers too! Nellie Befus, a 96-year-old resident of Aspen Commons, was one of the first volunteers at the Calgary Public Library and has now been volunteering there for 50 years! Nellie started volunteering at the library in 1974 when her children moved out. She has also run Aspen’s library in residence program for the last 12 years.

As you can imagine, Nellie has been attracting some media attention. In case you missed it, CTV ran a story about her commitment to the public library.

Thank you to Nellie and all our volunteers – we couldn’t do it without you!

Chelsea Murray from the Calgary Public Library presented Nellie with a plaque of recognition at a special event at Aspen last week.
