Inside Silvera, issue 15

Congratulations! Our employees have made Silvera the choice of Calgarians

We are humbled Silvera has been chosen for a Calgary Herald & Calgary Sun Reader’s Choice Award for Best Senior’s Residences. We’re thrilled with the recognition of our employee team, who provide exceptional, caring service to residents every day – and especially through the pandemic. We have loved serving Calgary seniors for nearly 60 years!

‘Tis the season to support Stockings for Seniors

This holiday season, we need your help to support seniors and older adults living in Silvera communities. You can show a resident how much you care by giving a stocking full of items they will love.

We welcome employees and their families to fill and donate a stocking and invite friends to join you in supporting the campaign. Learn more, including ideas for what to put in the stockings, and where to drop them off.

Watch for an employee survey in December

Silvera employees will be asked to complete an employee engagement survey in December.

Research shows when we are engaged as employees, we’re more likely to care about the organization and work hard to contribute to its success.

Engagement involves receiving relevant, accurate information, instructions and expectations to guide our work. It is also knowing our questions and feedback are valued and will be acted upon.

In December, you will receive a quick pulse check survey. This will be one of several you will receive about a variety of topics throughout the next year.

The survey will include a few focused, simple questions. As always, all employee feedback will be confidential –  only  general trends will be reported to management without comments that identify individuals).

This survey will be sent out to all employees in the second week of December, so please look out for further communication.

Your voice is important. Engagement helps us align our work with Silvera’s values: accountability, honesty, relationships, and innovation. This empowers us to contribute to the overall success of the organization, as well as our own personal growth and development.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

Manulife is here to help with financial decisions

If you’re new to investing, start by learning the basics and understanding your own investing style.

There are three general types of investments:

  • Guaranteed (a good choice if you want the security of watching your money grow and are able to leave it for a specific amount of time)
  • Fixed Income (your money is loaned to a company or government, and you can expect to get your money back with interest; a good choice if you want stable income)
  • Equities (your money buys shares or stocks in a company; a good choice if you feel the potential growth is worth the risk of possibly losing some or all of your investment)

Which you choose depends on your style. What are your goals, how much time do you have to watch your investments grow, how much help do you want along the way, and how much risk are you willing to take? Take the quiz in this Investor Strategy Worksheet to determine your investor style.

You can learn more by attending the Manulife webinar series. These free, live and interactive sessions cover themes such as financial wellness, investments, making the most of your plan, and retirement readiness.

Documentary – Love: The Last Chapter

A documentary created by director Dominique Keller, who lived at Silvera’s Aspen community during filming, was the Opening Night movie for the 2021 Calgary Underground Film Festival.

The film is an intimate portrait of three different couples as they navigate the delights and challenges of late-in-life romance. We’re pleased the filmmaker is sharing her perspectives and those of our seniors. We appreciate she is giving seniors a voice and telling their stories.

Aspen residents are looking forward to a special in-house screening of the film in the new year.

Top 7 over 70

Silvera recognizes Rob Easson, our Board Chair, for his exceptional leadership through the pandemic as well as his years of dedicated service to the citizens of Calgary.

As a nominee for the Top 7 Over 70 awards program, Rob is truly proud to have been considered with such an accomplished and dedicated group of Calgary leaders.

Rob Easson, Silvera’s board members and our employees congratulate the winners of the Top 7 Over 70 for their outstanding contributions to Calgary. You make our city great!

Calgary’s Montgomery community shows some big neighbourly love!

Neighbours of Silvera’s Shouldice community shared their appreciation for the work our employees have been doing throughout the pandemic. Some kind community members recently delivered thank you notes and Tim Horton’s gift cards for all employees. Community Manager Gerald says the gesture is sincerely appreciated by the Shouldice team. Guaranteed there are big smiles under those masks!
